Week 6: Portraits

Good Morning Class! I'm posting this a little late because its been a pretty busy week for me, and the little ones. My favorite photo in this series is actually the blurry one of my daughter, which is unfortunate because it would have come out really nice. No, I did not pose her or tell to smile...she just came to the edge of my bed and curiously asked what I was doing, and snap! Let me know what you think.

  1. In terms of the assignment the bottom to images are the strongest because of the directional light on the face. As a rule we want to avoid direct sunlight when it comes to portraits but these work out pretty well. One of the problems with sunlight is that it creates very contrasty situation so that the shadows are darker and the highlights brighter. Diffuse window light is actually the very best light.

I see your point about the blurry image… It can make for interesting emotion and energy. The main problem with it however is that you are looking into the light source here and her face is in deep shadow.

Babies are tricky to photograph because they don't tend to listen to directions very well… On the other hand with your baby and it's seat you can move the seat around to where there's decent light.

As with most of our assignments the main idea is where is the light?
