Week 2

Hello Class,
I do not have a creative bone in my body so to get creative and figure out what pictures should be taken are hard for me to grasp. When I think of reflections, I think of the ocean and the sun but I realize by whole concept before was wrong so I took some pictures of my last few trip to Puerto Rico. My husband took me through San Juan and Ponce which are amazing towns to go through if you are ever there to visit! I hope you enjoy!
The first picture is from San Juan, the next 3 pictures are from the Bacardi factory and the last 3 pictures are from Ponce!

week 2 structures and contrasts

This set of photos is a compilation over time.  Today is not ideal to shoot because of the rain however, I still managed to get some great shots of things I found interesting.

The first few photos are from my trip to the Historic Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles California. These are photos of the ceilings and fountains in the hotel.  Perfect examples of detailed structures.  The next set are of the St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City shortly after the visit from the Pope.  I loved the architectural lines.  The lighting inside is very limited so I did what I could to get as much of the detail as close as I could without zooming in. There are photos of the grapes from the vineyard that I loved to shoot.  For me there are not only the details of the individual grapes but the veins in the leaves, the stems and the branches.  I was able to take a great photo of my horrible rim on my car.  I felt the rain water and the cloudy light made for great contrast in the grays.  The photo of the fire hydrant was vibrant on this rainy day.  I am trying to learn how to capture round objects in a square frame a bit more closely.  There was also the photo of iron bars outside of the window at my aunts place was a neat capture of lines.  There are the vertical lines of the bars but also the horizontal lines of the bricks. I am actually enjoying this assignment and would like to post more of actual structures in the city when the weather permits.  I just wanted to make sure I had something just in case the weather does not let up this week with the impending storm.  The second to last photo is also of one of the ceilings in the Biltmore however the quality is not to par.  Being short and the ceilings so high make it difficult to capture without full zoom.  The last photo is of the Cathedral inside during mass. The one before it is a cropped and edited version perhaps not the best so I included the original to see which was the best version.  I like the original the most its brighter and more lively.

first photo of week 2

This is a photo of the paper umbrellas used in the drinks some friends and I had at Arrigoni Winery. I enjoyed the colors of the umbrellas, the details of the crimples in the delicate paper. I stationed them this way to capture some of the shadows we experienced while visiting.  While I know this is not a structure.  I enjoyed creating my own for sake of creativity. I will be uploading structures/monuments and other objects as requested but this one for me was quite fun.  There was no real way for me to capture this photo without the larger shadow being in the way as there was a tent next to us and where this table sat I was unable to move it.  Looking forward to some critiques on this as I start to capture shadows, lines and more details in my photos for this week.   It will help me gauge if I'm going in the right direction.  Thanks all!

Week 2

Hi Everyone,

Here we begin our creative work.  I want you to photograph in a town environment to look at geometric angles, reflections, leading lines (and of course light and shadow, if there are shadows.)

Here is a copy and paste from the syllabus.... also please check out the other resources and reading for this week there...

Assignment: Downtown
Photograph shapes, reflections, light and pattern in an urban or town environment paying particular attention to the shapes you select in the frame and the quality of light on the subject.
Avoid being far away or showing a whole building. Always shoot with natural light. Never use flash in this class... get in close, fill the frame.

Read about Paul Strand.... His work in New York City in the early 20th Century defined how photographers could use new ideas of modernism championed in painting to great effect.

Hello Class

I know I am a little late in posting, but I hope you will not mind me introducing myself over the long weekend. My name is Carmen and this is my second year at Albertus Magnus. I have been fortunate to find a school where my son can occasionally come with me to class and let me focus on the work ahead. I am development associate for a local community foundation and I enjoy what I do. However, I am continuing my education beyond my associates to continue growing as an individual; to eventually help others in need and to leave a type of legacy that my son will be proud to improve upon. Although I selected this class as an elective, when I was younger I use to LOVE to take photos. I am that person who has photographs going back to grade school. Some photos have a permanent spot in a photo album and others are gathered in a shoe box. One recent memory that will stay with me was putting a small album of photos together for my mother's (who was living with Alzheimer's at the time) 60th birthday. Because I am the one in the family always taking photos and actually get them printed out - I was able to put together photos of my siblings and there children along with photos from when we were kids. It is the one thing that I wanted the most when my mother passed away this past February. She was a wonderful lady with a big presence and that spirit of energy smiles at me everyday in a photo on my dresser of her in a pool while on vacation 'posing' in a comical way for me. I never shared that photo to much, until after her condition when she was no longer able to smile and be a part of lives like she had been. My son, who is now nine never got to spend time with her as 'gramma' but he is very sweet in saying that he believes he would have loved to spend time with her.  The power of a photo can take your mind and thoughts to many places, and I look forward to finding ways to improve on the hobby I left behind and hope to revive.
If you made it this far in my reading.... thank you and have a wonderful holiday weekend. Be safe.
Here is me with my son as we finished parking the car and getting ready to stay home for the wknd.
